Guinta Missal

The following pages contain photographs and descriptions of literary leaves
from fragments of the Guinta Missal, now on permanent display in the Alison Eliason Library.
This was a monastic missal, on heavy laid paper, printed in Venice in the year 1507 A.D.
by LucAntonio Guinta, a printer and engraver.  The Guinta Missal was intended for use by
the Italian Cassinese Congregation at St George's Monastery, a part of the Benedictine Order,
founded in 1408.  On average there are thirty-six lines of black and red Gothic text in two columns.
Leaves containing music consist of a four line stave in red with black notes and text.
Numerous full-page and small woodcuts are found throughout the missal. LucAntonio Guinta,
originally from Florence, incorporates the Florentine city emblem, the fleur de lys in
his printer's device, which is found on the last page of the Guinta Missal.
You may view the fragments of this Guinta Missal shown below by appointment at the Library.

"The Annunciation".

The shading in this woodblock has a  thickness and direction of parallel lines which give great dimensionality to the physical forms and a good sense of perspective in the interior view. This detailed shading technique resulted in a sensitive rendering of the story of the Annunciation and reflected an important characteristic of Italian Renaissance style that emerged in the late 1490s.*
