A fine Derby porcelain armorial soup plate with hand and dagger
in cloud painted by Richard Askew, c1795. For an oval deep plate from
this service and its attribution to Askew, please see "Derby Porcelain"
by F. Brayshaw Gilhespy, plate 92. The crest is that of Sir John Nelthorpe, 6th Baronet, who had estates at Barton and at Scawby in Lincolnshire. He was the subject of paintings by George Stubbs, both as a boy and later whilst out shooting with his dogs in Barton Field, and was an avid patron of the painter whilst Stubbs resided at Horkstow, Lincolnshire. |
